Excise PDF

Reading

Redacting a PDF without a full editing suite.

A black box only works if the information beneath it is actually removed. Here is how to check any redacted PDF and how Excise handles the saved copy.

Covering text is not redacting it

A rectangle can hide text visually while leaving the characters available to select, copy, search, or recover by deleting the rectangle. A real redaction removes the underlying content. The two can look identical on screen, so the saved file has to be checked.

Check a redacted PDF yourself

Use the saved output, not the original:

  1. Select and copy across the redaction. Paste into a plain-text editor. If the hidden words appear, they remain in the PDF.
  2. Search for the removed name or number. Any result means the text is still searchable.
  3. Check document properties and bookmarks. Titles, authors, keywords, and bookmark names can hold private information.
  4. Check forms and attachments. Form values and embedded files can carry information that is not visible on the page.

How Excise PDF handles it

  • Matched text is removed rather than covered with a removable annotation.
  • Fourteen supported hidden-data categories are cleared by default, including metadata, form values, bookmarks, annotations, and attachments.
  • The saved copy is reopened and checked, and the receipt shows what Excise inspected and what still needs attention.
  • Your original stays unchanged. Redaction output is written as a separate copy.

Excise PDF is available for Windows, Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
